Our team is made up of dedicated, compassionate individuals, all with unique skill sets, styles, and personalities. We are here to provide non-judgmental support for your individual needs and choices, whatever they may be. We warmly welcome families of all cultures, genders, sexualities, and abilities to our practice.
The members of WHDS believe that adequate information and unbiased support during pregnancy and birth are basic human rights, not luxury items. It is for this reason that we offer sliding scale fees, flexible payment plans, and some volunteer births. We volunteer our support to teens and military families with a deployed parent. We have extended volunteer on-call doula support to all birthing families in Yolo and Sacramento counties when referred by a labor nurse, midwife, or physician. In addition to birth doula services, we offer comprehensive childbirth preparation courses, pelvic health classes, placenta preparation services, community workshops, and an Apprentice Doula program all with an emphasis on personal empowerment and lifelong learning.
Welcome Home Doula Services, Inc. is a nonprofit organization offering perinatal education and support to individuals and families through the implementation of community-based trainings, outreach, and affordable doula services in the greater Sacramento area and beyond. Through these measures, we hope to reduce health disparities among low-income and underserved populations, as well as diversify and strengthen the community of birth professionals in our region.
Welcome Home Doula Services was founded in 2010 by Madeleine Shernock as a doula business with a special interest in serving low-income families. Seeing the need to train more doulas with a hands-on approach, Madeleine hoped to build a larger community of doulas available to meet the diverse needs of families in the greater Sacramento area. This prompted the creation of the Apprentice Doula Program in early 2011. Our group has grown into a practice with several mentor doulas and educators as well as a rotating group of apprentice doulas. Since the start of the Apprentice Doula Program, over 20 doulas have received training through WHDS.
In 2014, Welcome Home Doula Services, Inc. became recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
